In a recent interview on Radio 702’s Shapeshifters, Evan Jones, CEO of The Collective X, discussed the organisation’s mission to double South Africa’s output of in-demand digital jobs within the next three years.
Collective X’s role in the digital skills ecosystem is as a coordinating body, leveraging partnerships with major tech companies and aligning efforts with government initiatives.
Jones highlighted the critical digital skills shortage in South Africa, emphasising the gap between the 40,000 unfilled vacancies and the 20,000 digital skills produced annually by universities and training institutions. The Collective X seeks to address this by facilitating a national plan in collaboration with businesses and government to produce work-ready skills tailored to current and future market needs.
Highlights from the interview:
- AI and digital technologies should be viewed as paramount for creating new job opportunities, rather than causing job losses.
- Currently there is a critical need for a comprehensive approach involving businesses, training providers, and the redirection of funds to develop the required skills.
- Collective X plans to facilitate 10,000 young people into digital jobs over the next 36 months.
Jones emphasised that while the focus is on youth due to the high unemployment rate amongst this demographic, the initiative also includes reskilling the existing workforce. He encouraged businesses to participate and support the national plan to scale up digital skills production, ensuring a sustainable and competitive future for South Africa’s economy.
